Memorial at Topolany

It is dedicated to four native ones. Only two of them served with the RAF. One of them failed to survive the WWII. Major Jan Marsalek lost his life on July 14, 1951 while undergoing an WOP´s  course of an air gunner. F/Sgt Cyril Sklenar served with No 310 Fighter Sqn as an armourer. Joining a Resistence Group he was in hiding in France till the liberation of this country.

The memorial s situated in a tiny park near the Konice - Olomouc and Topolany - Krelov crossroads. It was cast by Mr Milan Polian in man-made stone in sand colour. The plaque was laser-engraved with the letters and digits. A leaf is made of metal.

Three speeches of Mayors of both the town of Olomouc and village of Hnevotin as well as Borough of Topolany were followed by two flypasses of L-159 Alca  jet fighter of the Czech Air Force. Three Salvoes of Honour also paid tribute to the four heroes. The memorial was unveiled by two former ones. Paying tributes ensued. The event was attended by four members of a re-enactment group, Olomouc Garrison Military Band, Members of Olomouc Engineer Reg, Topolany Voluntary Firefighters, families and dozens of other ones. It was closed by the ´Last Post´and the Anthem.

Both the Memorial and Notice Board were ordered and paid by the Topolany Borough Commision. All the information, contacts as well as pictures had been got thanks to the attitude of co-operation of the four families and sent to a particular officer of the Magistrate. Gratitude to Mrs Jana Purova, the Commision´s Head.

NOTE  : Two metres distant there is another memorial in this tiny park. Of black colour it was dedicated to two soildiers of the Soviet Red Army who had met their deaths while liberating this village from the Wehrmacht troops on May 8, 1945. It was unveiled in another place of the village and later moved to this tiny park.

Facing the Memorial of sand coulour dedicated to those four in a tiny park behind a local bus stop you can spot two noticeboards distant twelve meters on your right. Residents to the Olomouc Borough of Topolany can read information from the Magistrate on the one at left. Another one at right can be seen on both sides.  There are not only pictures of Frank Klevar, John Marsalek, Frank Muzikant and Cyril Sklenar there.  As data of their lives as badges of their units can be found over there by you too.

A black Memorial dedicated to two Soviet soldiers of the Red Army can be seen in the background of the picture taken from the North between a frame and a board. Those men in arms had lost their lives on May 8, 1945. The villagers collected money and erected this Memorial near the Chapel of the Lord´s Holy Heart next to the Statue of St. Wenceslas already on June 28, 1945. It was one of the first memorials of this kind within the territory of the Region of Olomouc.

This memorial was moved to the tiny park behind the local bus stop in the 70s. A resident recalls processions with Chinese lantern held every year. Walking through a whole village as far as this memorial attendees listened to a speech was held here by a local Official. A poem cited by a member of the local Youth Pioneer Group followed.

A bill for the above mentioned board was covered by the Topolany Borough Commission. Its members had prepared that for more than half a year. They also had got all the pictures of the four heroes born at the village including all the data. This Commision´s idea was a roofed board made of wood. But their opinion had not been taken into account by the Magistrates´ officer who was in charge of the matter.
